Social Icons Widget

While working on a project, I realized that I was repeating some of the same actions I’d performed numerous times before: creating a row of icons linking to the site owner’s various social media profiles. Finally, I decided that I would whip up a quick widget plugin to make things a little simpler.

The Social Icons Widget plugin adds a very simple widget that can be added to any widgetized area in your theme. Simply drag the widget into position and start filling out the information. By default, the widget allows you to specify the URLs for the following social media services:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • YouTube
  • LinkedIn
  • Google+
  • FriendFeed
  • Flickr

However, adding new services to the widget is extremely simple for theme developers. Simply hook into the social-icons-services filter and adjust the array of available services to fit your needs.

Information is included in the readme file explaining which filters are available through this plugin and how to style the output of the widget to match your theme.

You can see an example of this plugin at its simplest by looking at the “Follow me” section in the right sidebar of this website.

You can download the latest version of this plugin from the WordPress plugin repository.
